The Storyteller's Journal

Black and white illustration of a female warrior called Bellatrix sitting on a throne with a large dragon behind her.

Notes On A Character: Bellatrix

The Gaze

Bellatrix looks directly at the viewer.

Not to invite.

Not to challenge theatrically.

To assess.

Her eyes don’t soften.

They don’t look past you.

They fix.

Bellatrix doesn’t look away —

and she doesn’t need you to look back.

But you do.

The Dragon

The dragon curves behind her

like a closed circuit.

It doesn’t strike.

It doesn’t roar.

It doesn’t dominate the scene.

It mirrors her posture.

The dragon is a force held in reserve.

What she could unleash —

and hasn’t.

The Person

This piece tends to land with people who are comfortable being misunderstood.

People who don’t need approval to hold authority.

They don’t perform strength.

They inhabit it.

The strongest position isn’t forward motion.

It’s being immovable.
